Start With the Fluid Data Sheet, Not the Meter

You need at least six data points for a corrosive liquid. These are chemical name and concentration, fluid temperature at normal and maximum conditions, pressure in bar, viscosity in cP, electrical conductivity in µS/cm, and pipe size in DN. Also define the flow range in kg/h or m3/h. Most engineers skip conductivity. That creates problems because an electromagnetic flow meter needs a minimum conductivity of 5 µS/cm. Some acids and many solvents fall below that level.

In practice a 30 percent hydrochloric acid solution at 25 °C has a high conductivity above 600 mS/cm. That works well for an electromagnetic flow meter. But 98 percent sulfuric acid has low conductivity and may force you toward a Coriolis mass flow meter. This single detail changes the entire sensor selection.


Sensor Type Shortlist for Corrosive Chemicals

We recommend three sensor types for most corrosive liquid applications. Electromagnetic flow meters work for conductive acids, caustic soda, seawater, and chemical wastewater. They have no moving parts and allow full PTFE or PFA liner isolation. Coriolis mass flow meters handle low conductivity solvents, strong acids, and high accuracy mass batching. Ultrasonic flow meters with clamp on transducers can work when pipe contact is not allowed, but they need a clean flow profile and stable liquid properties.

A paint manufacturer in Southeast Asia replaced a failing mechanical meter with a DN25 Coriolis mass flow meter for solvent batching. The customer measured mass directly in kg/h and eliminated two separate instruments for volume and density. Lining and Electrode Selection Matters More Than the Flow Tube

The flow tube body is often carbon steel or stainless steel. The liner is the real chemical barrier. PTFE liner handles hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, and caustic soda up to 150 °C. PFA liner is preferred for vacuum conditions and temperatures to 180 °C. Do not use rubber liner for strong oxidizers or solvents because swelling and debonding occur.

Electrode material selection follows the fluid chemistry. Hastelloy C276 works for many acids and salt solutions. Tantalum electrodes handle concentrated sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid. Platinum electrodes handle high temperature alkalis. Avoid tantalum with hydrofluoric acid or fluoride containing streams. We have seen a customer site in Chile destroy a tantalum electrode within two weeks because the process contained trace fluoride. That is a costly mistake a sizing sheet can prevent.

Second, customers choose the right liner but the wrong electrode. Third, they ignore pressure drop for high viscosity chemicals. A positive displacement meter or Coriolis meter may be better for fluids above 100 cP. Fourth, they overlook gas bubbles or pulsating pumps. An electromagnetic flow meter can be noisy in those conditions. Fifth, they buy a flow meter rated for clean water and then install it in 80 °C sodium hydroxide. The liner and electronics need a temperature review.
