Wafer Type Oil Flow Meter: Space-Saving Sandwich Designs for Tight Pipe Gaps

Quick Answer: A wafer type oil flow meter sits between pipe flanges like a sandwich. It needs almost no straight run and fits gaps as tight as 50 mm. Silver Instruments provides wafer oval gear and turbine meters for diesel, fuel oil, hydraulic oil, and lube oil with 4-20 mA HART, pulse, and ATEX certification.

Why Tight Pipe Gaps Make Standard Meters a Problem

Most inline oil flow meters use flanged bodies that add 150 mm to 250 mm to the pipe length. In a marine engine room or a chemical dosing skid, the distance between two valves or filters often drops below 100 mm. You simply cannot install a standard oval gear or turbine meter without moving equipment or cutting pipe. This is where the wafer sandwich design solves the problem.

In practice, a wafer oil meter has a thin body. The thickness can be as low as 45 mm for a DN25 unit. You insert it directly between two PN16, ANSI 150, or JIS 10K flanges. Bolts pass through the flanges and the meter body. No loose spool pieces, no pipe welding. We have seen this on many customer sites in Vietnam and Nigeria where fuel day tanks sit in narrow skids.

Oil Types and Viscosity Requirements

Wafer oil meters work for a range of oils. Light fuel oil, diesel, kerosene, and biodiesel have viscosities from 2 cP to 10 cP at 20 degree C. For these low viscosity fluids, a wafer turbine meter with a straightening vane performs well. Accuracy stays within plus minus 1 percent of reading. The frequency pulse output lets a PLC track total liters.

Heavy fuel oil, gear lube, hydraulic oil, and crude oil often reach 100 cP to 1000 cP. A wafer oval gear meter gives better accuracy at high viscosity. The positive displacement design keeps plus minus 0.5 percent even when viscosity changes with temperature. Silver Instruments offers wafer oval gear meters with PT100 temperature pockets. You can connect a 4-20 mA temperature signal to correct volume to standard conditions. This matters a lot for custody transfer in the Middle East oil terminals.

Typical Wafer Sandwich Models from Silver Instruments

We supply two main wafer oil meter families. First, the OGF-W wafer oval gear meter covers DN15 to DN80. The body is 316L stainless steel with PPS gears for fuel oil or cast iron with aluminum rotors for heavy lube. The sandwich width is only 48 mm at DN25. Maximum pressure stands at 40 bar. Temperature range goes from minus 20 degree C to 150 degree C for standard version. With remote bearing sensors, the range extends to 200 degree C.

Second, the TF-W wafer turbine meter handles DN15 to DN100 for light oil and diesel. The rotor and bearing are tungsten carbide. The wafer thickness is 50 mm for DN50. It works up to 64 bar and 120 degree C. Each unit comes with a pick-up coil and a pre-amplifier for pulse output. Most engineers skip the external pre-amplifier if the cable run is under 100 m. We have shipped these to marine lubricant systems in Indonesia and palm oil thickeners in Colombia.

Installation Without Cutting Pipe or Shutting Down for Days

Here is the thing about wafer meters. You loosen the flange bolts, spread the flanges with a screw jack, slide the meter wafer in, and torque the bolts back. You need just 10 to 15 mm of axial play. In a scheduled shutdown of a fuel oil pumping station in Ghana, the crew installed four wafer oval gear meters in one morn

ing. The pump skid gap was 65 mm. Standard flanged meters would have required a pipe rework and two extra days.

A few practical points. Always center the meter gasket. Use the centering rings that come with the meter. For viscous oil above 200 cP, avoid sudden pressure shocks during start-up. A bypass loop helps. The meter needs a short upstream straight pipe if a valve or elbow sits very close. In wafer turbine meters, we recommend 5D upstream and 3D downstream where space allows. But inside a tight gap, a built-in flow straightener inside the meter body does the job.

Signal Outputs and Connectivity for Skid Builders

Wafer oil meters often go into OEM machines and modular skids. They need simple signals. Our standard wafer oval gear meter gives a reed switch pulse or NPN/PNP pulse for totalization. It also offers a 4-20 mA analogue output for rate and a 4-20 mA HART option for remote diagnostics. Pulse resolution goes from 10 pulses per liter for DN15 up to 0.1 pulse per liter for DN80. You can wire the pulse directly to a PLC high-speed counter.

For hazardous areas, we supply ATEX Zone 1 and IECEx certified wafer meters. The construction uses intrinsically safe pick-ups and suitable cable glands. A paint manufacturer in Southeast Asia ordered 12 wafer oval gear meters with ATEX Ex ia IIC T6 for a lacquer solvent blending system. The thin sandwich body allowed tighter rack mounting.

Quick Quote Request for Your Oil Flow Application

If you have a tight pipe gap and need an oil flow meter, send us your parameters. Tell us the oil name or type, viscosity in cP, pipe size DN, flow range in L/h or cubic meter per hour, process temperature in degree C, and pressure in bar. We will recommend a wafer meter model with the right body material and output. Use our contact page or email our distributors in Malaysia, UAE, or Chile for local support.

FAQ

Q: Can a wafer oil meter measure viscous crude oil at 800 cP?

A: Yes. A wafer oval gear meter handles 800 cP without losing accuracy. The positive displacement gears push the oil through. We supply units with bearing materials rated for heavy crude. Mention the viscosity when you request a quote.

Q: What is the minimum pipe gap for a wafer type oil meter?

A: For DN15 to DN25, the wafer thickness is about 45 mm to 48 mm. Add gasket thickness and you need roughly 55 mm between flanges. For larger sizes, thickness increases but stays under 70 mm up to DN80.

Q: Do wafer oil meters work in both flow directions?

A: Oval gear wafer meters can measure bidirectional flow but the pulse output is direction sensitive. We configure the pick-up for the main flow direction. Turbine wafer meters are unidirectional. Let us know if you need 2-way flow.

Q: Can I get a 4-20 mA signal and a pulse output from the same meter?

A: Yes. Silver Instruments offers dual output transmitters on wafer oval gear meters. You get one 4-20 mA loop for flow rate and one pulse output for totalization. HART protocol is available on the same loop.

Q: Do you supply food grade wafer oil meters for edible oil?

A: We supply 316L polished wafer oval gear meters with EPDM or PTFE seals. These meet FDA requirements for vegetable oil, palm oil, and olive oil. We can provide 3.1 material certificates and surface roughness reports.
